Making Art out of Pennies

Miniature Painting - Abe's Millenium 1973

Jacqueline Lou Skaggs created these 12 miniature works of art, each carefully hand-painted on discarded pennies she used as her canvas. The art collection is titled "Tondi observations."

Dirty Wonders

I was trawling through yahoo the other day and came across this slideshow of pictures!

Using dusty car windows as his canvas, artist Scott Wade creates dramatic black and white illustrations--depicting everything from pop-culture icons to famous works of art.

Here're some of the ones that I was captured by.

Not Bright At All

Mutant Weeds
Madrid, Spain

Irony
Of all the environmental pollution that can be found in the city of Madrid, the most evident is light pollution, so much so that in our sky we can never see the Milky Way and hardly any stars. This overillumination is evident to the naked eye at a distance of more than 200 kms and produces a glow that can be seen with a medium-size telescope for more than 700 kms.
It is therefore very surprising, that at a time when the European Union is so careful with issues of environmental pollution, the Dept. of the Environment of the City Council of Madrid rules for illuminated signs, adopted a couple of years ago, changed the rules for  pharmacy signs, to allow them to be replaced with much more powerful ones.
So much light emanates from the new crosses that the environment that surrounds each pharmacy, is permanently tinted a deep, vibrant and unnatural green color. Objectively speaking, one could say that the majority of the urban green spaces in our city, are more the result of erroneous illuminated sign rules than the commitment of our institutions to provide the city with places where you can be in contact with nature.
In addition to the obvious color change of the streets, the neighbors who live in the vicinity of 24 hour pharmacies, have watched impotently as every night their rooms become disturbing green places, in which life and the perception of what happens in them is altered, without being able to do anything to avoid it.

It's warm here..

I live on a tropical island.

We have 2 different seasons throughout the year - hot and wet.

Which is why I'm fascinated with two seasons in particular! I absolutely adore autumn/fall and winter.
Thus, I felt my jaw drop when I saw this snow drawings by Sonia Hinrichsen (and 5 volunteers) in Rabbits Ear Pass, Colorado this January.

I gotta say, I am totally curious how they managed to make all these symmetrical circles.

Do the volunteers become dizzy after walking round and round, again and again?

Museums

I love museums. The feeling of being in a place filled with creativity and genius sends tingling feelings up my spine.

Barney Smith, is definitely one creative guy with his Toilet Seat Cover Art Museum in San Antonio, United States...

...with 700 over seats that he collected during his years working as a plumber.

Saving the Penguins

"As you may be aware, the oil spill & potential disastrous effects to wildlife & environment off the coast of Tauranga is frightening.
A small number of little blue penguins have already been caught in the oil spilled to date with growing fears that more will be effected. Skeinz has been asked to help with the penguin relief by knitting small Penguin PJ’s to help protect the birds & prevent them from preening their feather & ingesting the toxic oil."

Help knit sweaters, help save penguins!

2011

A new year, a new start (hopefully).

2010 was not spectacular but neither was it depressing.

For the start of 2011 (or to be more accurate, while listening to the dying breaths of 2010), I have been rather obssessed with impressionist paintings.

This is one that I adore.

I am at a stage where I am questioning modernist thinking. Although when people talk about impressionist paintings, the first artist that comes to mind would probably be claude monet, lets take a step back, stop questioning about originality and rights of creativity, and just enjoy this piece of art, its skill and its artistry.

All hail google images
